Socialism of the Multitude

“Handouts for all five thousand? / Communism surely.”

Handouts for all five thousand?

Communism surely.

What a way to dirty the streets

And remove the motivation to work!

Handouts for all five thousand?

Who will grow the thorns,

Sew the shrouds,

Smith the nails,

And build our many crosses?

Handouts for all five thousand?

These sex workers, beggars, and tax collectors?,

These blind, dumb, and lame?

Bread, loaves, and love wasted,

On children of God,

Who have produced nothing.

Handouts for all five thousand?

This, a task better left to Samaritans–

For we Priests, Levites, and Evangelists

Have wells to drain

Fish to rot

And bread to trash.

Handouts for all five thousand?

As a viral marketing scheme?

Charging a hundred dollars a leper,

And a thousand to calm the Galilee?

But when the camel passes the needle

And the five thousand revel in poverty

Let us not shed tears

For their death at Calvary.
